In the past decade alone, Amsterdam has experienced a twenty percent surge in tourism. The historic capital of the Netherlands has long been a popular destination for Europeans on holiday, but the rapid growth of the city’s business district has also, nor surprisingly, increased business travel. According to the most recent numbers, Amsterdam welcomes over three and a half million guests each year.

But what many travellers are blissfully unaware of before they plan their trips is that Amsterdam is a relatively small city, at least by global standards, with fewer than eight hundred thousand residents in the city proper. This means that it can and often is difficult to find appealing accommodation in Amsterdam at short notice.

Though the global recession did have an effect on tourism to the city, it has not been nearly as pronounced or prolonged as early estimates. But now as the economies of most European countries have emerged from recession, the city expects slow and steady recovery of the tourism industry where the trend has seen consistent growth for more than a decade now. And with the government sponsoring a number of impressive new ad campaigns, there is no reason to believe that the tourists will fail to return to Amsterdam.
